Mentoring is a rewarding way to give back to your profession. When you become a Mentor for one of our Externship Programs, you help ensure the field of plastic surgery continues to evolve and grow as emerging talent brings fresh ideas and perspectives to the table.

This kind of support can be particularly important for underrepresented groups in our field, who may face unique obstacles and barriers to success. By fostering a culture of mentorship, collaboration, and inclusion, we can ensure that the next generation of plastic surgeons and researchers are well-equipped to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Benefits of Mentoring

  • Enhance your leadership, communication, and mentoring skills by guiding the next generation of researchers.

  • Establish meaningful connections with young, enthusiastic individuals poised to make significant contributions to the field of aesthetic surgery.

  • Engage in innovative research projects that could lead to publications and conference presentations with a motivated group of medical students. (Cooperative Research Externship)

To make the program more accessible to more externs, we hope to sign up at least one mentor in every state. You can help us achieve this goal by signing up for one or both options below today!

Externship Mentor

When you become an Externship Mentor, we pair you with a student extern participating in our Externship or Externship With Scholarship program.

Eligibility

Responsibilities

  • Mentor a medical student for one year.

  • Dedicate time each month for a 1:1 conversation with your assigned extern.

  • Conduct a 5-day observership in your practice/office to be mutually agreed upon based on the student’s medical school schedule. In advance, outline what the extern can expect from you and your practice during this observership.

  • Be a guiding resource for the extern during The Aesthetic Meeting (either in person or remotely).

  • Include the extern in some aspect of a research project (if applicable).

Timing

  • You can sign up anytime, but please note matching occurs once a year, typically each Fall. To participate in the 2024 program, please sign up before July 1, 2024.

SIGN UP TO MENTOR - EXTERNSHIP

Cooperative Research Externship Mentor

When you become a Cooperative Research Externship Mentor, we pair you with a group of student externs participating in our Cooperative Research Externship program who will assist you with your aesthetic research project.

Eligibility

  • Must be an active member of The Aesthetic Society or ISAPS

  • Must be participating in, or plan to participate in, an aesthetic research study

Responsibilities

  • Mentor a research team of 2-4 medical students whose skill sets complement the research focus. This collaborative structure fosters a robust research environment and ensures successful project completion(s).

  • Include your team of externs in an aspect of a research project. We encourage you to propose research projects, and the externs can draft proposals for your review and assessment.

  • Work with your externs to finalize a research project, ensuring alignment with both parties' expertise and interests.

  • You should complete at least one research project with your student group. However, we highly encourage undertaking additional projects.

  • Student groups will present their findings at least twice at national conferences, showcasing the collaborative efforts and advancing the field of aesthetic surgery.

  • Conduct at least one monthly meeting with your extern group to assess progress, address concerns, and foster a collaborative environment.

Timing

  • You can sign up anytime, but matching typically occurs once a quarter.

SIGN UP TO MENTOR - COOPERATIVE RESEARCH EXTERNSHIP

The number of externs and mentors does not always align, so while we graciously welcome all mentors into the program, we can not guarantee that you will match with an extern or research team of externs every program cycle.
